Purpose and Usage

TXA, or Tranexamic Acid, is an antifibrinolytic agent.

It prevents the breakdown of fibrin, stopping fibrinolysis.


TXA is given through an IV:

  • 1 g over 10 minutes (slow push)
  • Then 1 g over 8 hours via infusion

TXA should be given within 3 hours of injury for best effect.

Contraindications and Notes

Contraindications include, but are not limited to:

  • Hypersensitivity to TXA
  • Active intravascular clotting
  • DVT (deep vein thrombosis)
  • PE (pulmonary embolism)
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Subarachnoid haemorrhage

Use caution in renal impairment.


Points to remember:

Always attempt bleeding control first using:

  • Gauze
  • Wound packing
  • Direct pressure
  • Tourniquets

TXA is not a replacement, only an addition to bleeding control.
