What Is Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation, or rehab, is why EMTs are often requested to fire scenes.

They remain on standby in case firefighters are injured.

Examples include:

  • Burns
  • Smoke inhalation

Once the fire is knocked down, rehab includes:

  • Replacing lost electrolytes
  • Providing water
  • Supplying light snacks during long incidents

How to

On arrival, set up rehab near the fire scene but not too close.

Rehabilitation involves:

  • Monitoring vitals
  • Heart rate
  • Breathing
  • SpO2

Provide:

  • Sufficient rest
  • Cool or shaded areas
  • Air-conditioned shelter if available

Hydration and nutrition:

  • Water
  • Electrolyte drinks
  • Light snacks for prolonged operations

Treatment:

  • Oxygen for low SpO2
  • Address shortness of breath
  • Monitor high heart rate

Minor injuries can progress if untreated.

Only clear firefighters to return to duty when vitals are normal and hydration is adequate.
